Mackie Onyx Blackjack: Line Audio CM3 vs sE X1R, FetHead

Post by BGR » Wed Mar 12, 2014 6:56 pm

Side by side comparison of a Line Audio Design CM3 and a sE Electronics X1R -ribbon- attached to a Triton Audio FetHead for dynamic microphones.
Both connected through a Mackie Onyx Blackjack.
Both microphones received roughly the same signal. My voice.
And I was about 83cm or 32.7in away from the capsules.

INFO: Auria made. Recorded two different mono tracks. Edited and then joined. No EQ, Fades or effects. After that, I exported each joined files to Audioshare -to rename them and send them to Instashare-. No Mixdowns used.

Space: A normal living room in a house outside the city. Carpeted, a big sofa and big wooden furniture around.

Post by BGR » Mon Mar 17, 2014 4:27 am

NOTE: Even though the Tascam IM2 file states that it is 24bit, the IM2 does not provide true 24bit audio samples. Only 16bit audio samples.

Side by side comparison of a Line Audio Design CM3 and the right microphone of a Tascam IM2.
The CM3 was connected through a Mackie Onyx Blackjack.
Both microphones received roughly the same signal. My voice.
And I was about 83cm or 32.7in away from the capsules.

INFO: The CM3 take was recorded on Auria. The IM2 take was recorded on MultitrackDAW on an iPhone 4s; and then transferred the original BINS to Auria. Edited, synced and joined. No EQ, Fades or effects. No Mixdowns used.

Space: A normal living room in a house outside the city. Carpeted, a big sofa and big wooden furniture around.

2x Rode M3. Zoom H1 vs Tascam iXJ2

Post by BGR » Tue Mar 25, 2014 3:39 am

Side by side comparison of my pair of Rode M3 microphones. Both 9v battery self powered.
One connected to a Zoom H1. And the other to a Tascam iXJ2.
Both microphones received roughly the same signal. My voice.
And I was about 83cm or 32.7in away from the capsules.

NOTE: I used only one input on both interfaces -mono recordings-. And these two interfaces only provide 16bit audio samples. That means that even if the original recorded files are supposed to be 24bit, they will contain only 16bit audio samples when these interfaces are used.

INFO: I don't have two iPads. So I used an iPad 4 and an iPhone 4s to make the comparison of the interfaces. I recorded into MultitrackDAW on both -24bit, 48kHz-. I "open in" BINS in Audioshare. Renamed the individual files to not get lost with large BIN names. The same process was made on both the iPad 4 and the iPhone 4s. After that, I transferred the iPhone files to the iPad with Instashare. "Open in" Audioshare and then imported all the files into Auria. Edited and tried to sync as much as possible; and joined. No EQ, Fades or effects. And finally, I exported the joined files back to Audioshare to rename them and to "open in" in Instashare again to transfer the final files to my Mac. No Mixdowns used.

Space: A normal living room in a house outside the city. Carpeted, a big sofa and big wooden furniture around.

Zoom H1 vs Tascam iXJ2. 24bit, 48kHz.

What you'll hear:
  • -Second 00: Both interfaces with the gain at 60 percent.
-Second 17: Both interfaces with the gain at 80 percent.
-Second 34: Both interfaces with the gain at 100 percent.

These two files are synced so you can open them side by side in your favorite audio editor to see and hear the differences.

Equipment Zoom H1:
  • -Rode M3. 9v battery self powered.
-Zoom H1. Only one side used -mono recording-.
-INTENSO MobyPack mobile phone charger. 5200mAh. 5V, 2.1A.
-small Logilink Passive 2.0 USB Hub.
-Y cable to connect the 2i2 to the hub and to the mobile charger.
    -Camera Connection Kit to USB.
    -iPad 4.
Equipment Tascam iXJ2:
  • -Rode M3. 9v battery self powered.
-Tascam iXJ2. Only one side used -mono recording-.
    -iPhone 4S.
