What iPad 5 64 bit architecture means for Auria?

Post by fusionarts » Fri Sep 27, 2013 8:16 pm

How much of a factor will the 64 bit architecture in the, soon to be released, ipad 5's have on an app like Auria? I read on the audiobus forum Rim stating that:

"Auria has always been 64 bit through the entire audio path (since it's release).

Rim"

Probably too soon to ask, but I'd be curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

This looks promising for musicians. Scroll down towards the bottom of the article.

"Auria has always been 64 bit through the entire audio path"

64 bit processor just means addressing more ram, 64 float processing in an audio scenario is completely different.

The most common benefit from an OS going to 64 bit is the amount of RAM it can address. In the case of an iPad, unless the next version breaks the 4GB barrier, that won't make much difference for us.

But for audio, 64 bit adds a great deal. Many audio processing algorithms use 64 bit math internally already (including Auria). When you do 64 bit processing on a 32 bit OS (like Auria does now), it uses a lot of extra CPU. With a true 64 bit OS and hardware, this can result in a huge increase in speed. I'm not only referring to Auria's 64 bit mixer mode. I'm talking about plugins, like the channelstrip, FabFilter, PSP and other third party plugins. If there's any 64-bit math going on inside these already, they will get faster under a 64 bit OS.

Wow... Thanks for the explanation Rim! Very interesting and very promising...
After the iPhone 5s, the next ipad is surely going to be. 64bits also, so it could be perfect for us !!
Could it also means for example, that drumagog could gain fonctionality like the desktop version ? Or maybe would it need more power ?

Thanks again

It wouldn't have any impact on functionality, only CPU usage. Drumagog doesn't make use of any 64 processing. Usually plugins with filters (EQ), compression, reverb, etc would benefit if they already use 64 bit math.

Thanks for your answer, so the only way ( for Drumagog) would be to have for example 4Go of ram on the next ipad ?
( maybe the ipad 7 or 8 ...)

Actually, none of this relates to Drumagog. We just chose not to implement any additional functionality. It could have been done at launch, but I just don't have the time ;)

So possibly down the road we might see a drumagog update. Speaking of all things gog, any plans for updating Igog?

Everything is on the back burner while I work on Auria. Definitely these things will be updated at some point ;)
