I bought one of these adapter and it doesn't work.
It can charge but not when connected to midi interface , , my adapter only charge when syncing.
It may be an Apple hardware limitation.
When it comes to Apogee digital the big drawback is the lack of digital output.
The only solution I found is iConnect Midi (http://www.iconnectivity.com/iConnectMIDI4plus)
that can charge record and play have midi and can be (or not) connect to Mac/pc to send audio/midi flow.
The only remaining questions with iconnect is it multitrack or only stereo playing recording.

the Tascam iU2 has one, and charges the iPad at the same time.

Not the best interface because it has some problems with sampling rates (which can be avoided by leaving a plug in the headphone socket), but not too bad. In the studio I usually use the digital output.

Google this:
Griffin StudioConnect for iPad
Not the best as far as gazintas & gazoutas, (no USB!) or least expensive, but it does the charging while in use, and it's got MIDI in/out.

So, I finally got this in the post today (sorry for the shitty pic).
I'm using my ipad3 and Focusrite Scarlett 18i20.
No, this doesn't work with my setup. It will charge, but only if no other device is connected, and won't connect to any other device whether charging or not.
I'm going to offer it to my nephew who has an ipad2 and if I get chance I'll pass on if it works for him.
After spending £400 on the 18i20 (which is great in every other way), I'll just have to put up with short recording sessions.
