Recommend a interface for a iPad Music class

Post by kas_lar » Thu Aug 08, 2013 2:12 am

Hi everybody!
I'm starting a Music on iPad class in 3 weeks.
I need 10 interfaces for my students.
The interfaces must have:
1 instrument input
1 xlr micpre input
Midi interface or midi Keyboard

I would like to avoid buying 10 Camera Connection Kits. But let me know you guys recommend:-)

Best regards from Denmark, Copenhagen.

Hello,

Your best options to get all of those features would probably be the Alesis IO Dock or the Lexicon Omega. Both are around the same price, but the Lexicon would need the Camera Connection Kit. It probably is a bit more reliable than the IO Dock though.

Alesis IO Dock: http://www.alesis.com/iodock
Lexicon Omega: http://www.lexiconpro.com/en-US/products/omega

These two would be the cheapest options--there are certainly more expensive interfaces on the market with the specs you require. Here is a list of all the devices we've tested so far: http://auriaapp.com/Support/auria-audio-interfaces

Best,

Thanks guys.

The students will be using the ipad mini. The Alesis and behringer dock will not be an option. Do you guys have any other advice?

Best regards

The Lexicon is still an option, but another would be the PreSonus AudioBox 22VSL: http://www.presonus.com/products/AudioBox-22VSL.

Focusrite iTrack Studio and yes you will need 10 camera connection kits. They are being advertised at Sweetwater for $199. This includes an iTrack Solo/ headphones/ Studio Condenser Mic. You should be aware that these units need powered usb hubs because the iPad cannot supply enough power to power up these audio boxes. The io dock and Apogee power your iPad while in use. Midi is usually via USB so just plug the USB keyboard into the powered hub that the Focusrite is plugged in to. Cheers and hope that helps.

Here is where I recommend the Akai EIE again..

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EIE
On sale at $179 and I've seen it as low as $139 in the past. No need to mess with powered hubs- it has one built into the back for USB midi gear. Best all around value for an iPad interface!
Wow I am sounding like a stuck record!!

The iTrackSolo cable is already converted to 30pin for iPad, so you will not need camera connection kits for it. If you are using iPad Mini you will need 30pin to lightening adapters.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to assist you.

Best regards.

I'm using a Roland Duo Capture EX - it works great. I recommend it because:

1. It has 2 XLR/instrument inputs
2. Has MIDI in and out
3. Can be USB-powered with Mac or PC . . . . or can be powered from 3 AA batteries for iPad. (making it a truly portable solution for field recording)
4. It offers phantom power

I've had the unit for a week and it is working great with an older MIDI keyboard and condensor as well as dynamic mics using Auria, Neo Soul Keys, Animoog and Voice synth.

I am using this camera connection adaptor that cost me under $3 U.S. dollars:
