Thoughts on highlight tool

Post by RobB » Tue Apr 23, 2013 6:18 am

I just noticed while playing with this tool that it can also be used to join regions. I don't know if this was the intended behaviour but it's a time saving feature. The only prob is if you accidently select a region on an adjacent track that region seems to disappear.
Also the regions don't need to be completely enclosed, like they need to be when multiple selecting. I don't know if there's a reason why they can't just be 'touched' by the highlight and be selected, I certainly prefer that way.
So, if this can be a feature could we possible have another icon below the scissor icon to join. That way it would be a simple action. Double click drag and either separate or join. Nice.

You could enable the multi select button (far up to the left in the edit window) and then click on the regions you want to select/join and chose "join" in the edit menu. If that's what you're after, I might have misread you..Long night here :?

Thanks Chris, that is probably the fastest way.

It's just that I noticed that the highlight tool can also be used to 'select' regions without using 'select highlight regions' in the menu, and the join command still works. Which is what got me to thinking about adding the extra icon to the highlight box to streamline the workflow a bit so joining could be done without going to the menu (like splitting).

Have a good sleep.

Thanks guys, yes, that's indeed a bug. Join should only work if the highlighting is on one track. I've added this to the bug list.

I opted for a different functionality on the highlight tool when using join. For join, you only need to touch the region with the highlight in order for that region to be included in the join. This is different than the select highlighted regions, which work more like a scissors tool (you have to completely enclose the region for it to be selected).

And the highlight tool does cut and copy too!!!!

Can I humbly suggest a fly out menu (like the crossfade styles menu) with icons for: Separate, Join, Select, Cut, Copy. That would create a very fast workflow for region editing.

Maybe the 'Rim plays himself' video will do the trick.

Seriously, looking forward to this one though. It just gets better and better.

Well I tried lol. But seriously, really exciting to see what you guys have in store. Auria really have taken huge steps theese last couple of months with all the improved region editing, time stretch, side chaining and so on. :)
