Out of memory very quickly

Post by opoteat » Sun Jun 23, 2013 12:04 pm

Love the app. First post. I have iPad4 version with 128gb. Have Presonus Firetube Studio, Presonus AB1818 and Focusrite iTrack Solo. I have been using iTrack Solo because I'm lazy and it's easier. Just this week tried for the first time to record a full song in Auria. I got up to about 7 tracks and when I arm the 8th track to record the CPU spikes and I start getting noise and warnings.About half the tracks have effects on them.

So my questions are: Is this normal? Is it related to the iTrack Solo? Would another interface, same the Duet or Quartet help with that?

I tried freezing tracks but that seems counter-productive when I'm just in scratch mode 7 tracks in to song.

Your thoughts?

I have the Focusrite 2i2 and its working good for me. The iTrack Solo is virtually the same box. Your iTrack Solo plays no part in the memory under-run your experiencing. However I do find that if I leave my 2i2 plugged in for a long time without ever turning it off, I sometimes get audio problems. So to relieve this simply unplug the usb plug from the back of your iTrack Solo and replug it back in and this will reset the iTrack Solo. Try to flush out your iPads memory in case something is hanging in the memory. To do this simply hold down your home button and reset button at the same time and continue to hold down until you see the apple. As well people are going to ask you what your project setting were. Did you record at 44.1 khz or 96? this will make a difference. Check that you don"t have 64bit mixer mode on as this uses up cpu. If the plugins that are frozen are big ones like Saturn, ProL, ProDS this seems to slow down the performance even if the tracks are frozen in my experience. Of course make sure that no other apps are in the background running and this can include social apps that still run in the back like skype. You probably already know all this but try anyway. Maybe another forum member can offer some suggestions as well. Good luck. Most of these tricks work in getting my iPad 4 under control. I usually work on 24 - 32 tracks in Auria with little or no breakdown in Audio or performance quality. Cheers and hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Anthony. I appreciate it greatly. I am trying to record at 24/96, without the 64bit mixer option. Just channel strip on channels with Convolution Reverb + PSP Stereo Delay on Aux 1/2 and PSP Microwarmer on Master Insert. 9 Channels works... I arm the 10th one and it get flakey in a hurry.

Thanks for help.

Are you getting CPU or memory warnings? These are two completely different things.

Are you running any other audio apps in the background? This can hugely affect both CPU and memory, depending on the audio app. Some audio apps take up almost the entire CPU and memory for themselves, leaving little for other apps.

Rim I'll make a better notes next time. If I hold power and home until I see Apple Logo and turn on Airplane mode, it's as clean as it can be, right?

No, that doesn't close background apps at all. This is a different concept from Mac and PCs, where rebooting closes everything. In the case on an iPad, after you reboot, it will reopen all your background apps.
The only way to clear your background apps is to double-tap on the home button, then close everything you see in the list (tap and hold on an icons, then press all the x's). Make sure you close everything - including apps like Safari and settings.

Thanks RIM. So, it is processor that's getting slammed. Jumps from 55% to 60% when arming 9th track.

OK, that's pretty normal, depending on what kind of plugins you have on that track, or whether you have the channelstrip enabled. Arming the track for record also uses more CPU, depending on the Record Latency setting in the settings page. If you increase this, the CPU usage will go down (a good value here is 1024 if you don't care too much about latency when recording).

Also, if you're using 64 bit mode in the settings, this could almost double your CPU usage.
