VSCO2 orchestra samples

Post by MusicInclusive » Sat Jan 21, 2017 3:50 pm

Inspired by a conversation with someone earlier about Lyra samples, I downloaded the complete VSCO2 orchestra and installed it in Auria Pro. The latest is available from the github site (link below) as a complete zip file download. Very easy to install in the Sampler Instruments directory - just unzip the zip file and copy the resulting directory over; it's already set up in a way that Auria Pro can access.

Nice thing about this over the SSO samples is that there are more articulations per instrument, where an instrument is supported. OTOH it doesn't have all the instruments that SSO has. E.g. it has solo violin with sustain, pizzicato, spicato, tremolo, vibrato, vibrato quiet, but does not have a solo cello - only a cello section. SSO by contrast has a solo cello but for its solo instruments only has sustain for cello and for violin, pizzicato, staccato and sustain.

Anyhow - here's the link.

https://github.com/sgossner/VSCO-2-CE/tree/SFZ

Go there - and on the right click the green button that says: Clone or download. Then Download ZIP. Save the zip to somewhere and then unzip it and then transfer the unzipped hierarchy somewhere where you can use iFunbox or the like to add it to Auria Pro's Sample directory.

And here's the original page describing things:

Caveat: *Some* of the samples are a little ropey IMO. Could be better. But - hey - it's another source right? ;-) Some EQ and you are doing well. Also it has some limited round robin on short samples too - which is very nice to have to avoid the machine-gun effect.

Very quick and dirty example result. Cello pizzicato, legato and spiccato. Some Pro-EQ2, Pro-C (for narrowing on the pizzi and legato), and a touch of Pro-MB and Pro-L on the output. Auria Pro's convolution reverb on BigRichHall for the verb.

Nothing fancy. Not especially well timed. Just three voices on three tracks to illustrate a few of the sounds of VSCO2.

That's awesome! Are there other resources similar to this available online?

There is virtual playing Orchestra at www.virtualplaying.com. It almost works in Lyra, but I think there's a bug in Lyra. In the SFZ code there are pan opcodes that cause only one side (L or R) to play.

I tried SSO also, but the cello staccato patch did not play at all, and the brass samples didn't play right. On the brass, An LPF velocity track opcode cause them not to play right.

Did you have these problems with SSO?

I haven't tried VSCO yet. I'll download and try!

I'm curious about you effect settings. I thought the sample you posted sounded good!
Thanks!
Jon

No problem with SSO, no. FX settings suit the track and mix of instruments in question :) not sure it'd be of much help to specifically mention this or that setting. What I did was to emphasize the pizzicato and spiccato note range and deemphasize the legato to allow those to stand out in the mix. Some high pass cutoff too, different dB rolloffs as it seemed to work best. etc. etc.

Here are the problems I had with SSO.

http://auriaapp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=14948

So SSO on your iPad, the cello staccato patch works, the percussion all patch works, and the brass don't suddenly start playing super loud at midi velocity 120? I'd love to know if it's just me. I would love to fix it!
Thanks!

Correct - I have none of those problems.

Cello staccato works
Percussion all works fine starting around C3 up to around C#6
Not had any problems with brass velocity, (I haven't tested what you said specifically, but I've used various brass patches - notably French horn - without issue).

Hmmmmm....I wonder what wrong with my setup? The trumpet sustain patch, if I play on the Lyra keyboard, played softly, until I touched the very end of the key and then it would play super loud. Had to modify the filter in the SFZ code to make it work. Can you try it, see what happens? I'm on an iPad 2 Air with latest IOS.

Did you Modify the code any in the Samples= line to have it point to a different folder, or just drag and drop it in as is with iFunbox? SSO that is...
Thanks!

Yes - I am seeing some issues with the SSO brass volumes. Odd. Hadn't noticed that before and I've used some of the brass too. Hmmm. I'll rummage a bit more.

As a work around, I had to comment the "veltrack lpf" lines (3 lines of code I think) out of the code. After modifying the code, you can use the knob controls on Lyra to put it back in to roughly the same thing...

Thanks for trying that. I was starting to think I was running around in circles, chasing "ghost bugs" that weren't there!

I'll have to tinker around a but more to figure out why my SSO setup for celli staccato and the percussion all won't play...been puzzling me for a while, but if your setup work, I definitely did something wrong :)

Another bug I found in Virtual Playing Orchestra is the Pan=[something greater than 0]. http://auriaapp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=14952

Would love if you could try to put a pan=10 opcode in one of the SSO SFZ files. If it pans all the way right, then I think that would confirm the bug. PAN=10 should just pan the sample a little to the right, but Lyra will play it back with only R side playing, and the L side completely cut out.
Thanks!
Jon

Thanks for this. Super easy with ifunbox. Took more time to download than to install.

Good to know. I might look at that with the SSO samples. Appreciate the detail.

I looked at the Virtual Playing Orchestra collection too - which is a mashup of SSO, VSCO2 and others that seeks to provide a consistent set of broader articulations across more instruments. I downloaded it and put it in Auria Pro, but, I have to say, I'm not really impressed with what the author has done with it (unless of course I'm "using it wrong" :) - always possible ;) )

I actually prefer the standalone samples from either SSO or VSCO2 (of course with the above caveats about SSO taken into account).

There are, it appears to me, some strange artifacts with the VPO collection. I'd be interested in others' opinions who have done similar side-by-side comparisons, but, as it stands although I'll probably leave it on for a while to test it, I'm happier with either SSO or VSCO2.
