Probably a stupid question about volume

Post by buzzardwhiskey » Mon Sep 21, 2015 2:16 pm

Here's my chain of equipment:

Mic -> Apogee One for iPad and Mac -> iPad

So, I've been setting the "gain" of the Apogee One using its Maestro software. Generally keeping the signal in the lower third of the output (understanding that lower has very little penalty and higher can have bad repercussions).

In Auria, then, does it matter where the volume pot is adjusted? It doesn't seem to matter... at least not while recording (it does during playback).

Perhaps the volume sliders matter if there are more than one input coming in?

Sorry for the stupid question.

Thanks.

Not stupid at all. It shows you are paying attention to details, which is a good thing.

The fader only reports what's recorded or is currently being fed from the inputs.
If you double tap the tracks' record arm button, a pop-up window appears with choices. One choice is to change the input volume.

Verbage from the manual:
One final note is that this is a software-based level control, and as such it is only scaling the audio signal present at the physical input. Please take care to monitor signal level at the audio interface, as any clipping that occurs there will not be fixed by lowering Auria’s record level; it will simply record a quieter version of distortion.

Ah ha! A double tap for input volume control!

Thanks so much!

I think that should be tap&hold (not double-tap) :)

D'oh! Thanks @washboy

Yep, although the manual says it's a double tap and hold. Not near my iPad so I can't confirm right now though.

It just shows that buzzardwhiskey is paying more attention than I. :D
