Advice wanted

Post by Fitz » Thu Sep 17, 2015 7:14 am

Hi,
Looking for advice. I'm wanting to record my group live, to make a live demo, maybe mix it with video, but have some control over the mix.
We are a 3 piece. The 2 guitars would go directly into the audio interface, then come out on separate channels. Same with mic-ed up cajon player. Then a 4th channel would be used to record the room.
I was thinking, as I'm on a budget, to use the Akai EIE red audio interface. Would that do what I want? Record 4 inputs, then send out 3 separate outputs? And record on 4 separate channels in Auria?
Also, what mic would I use for the room sound (audience plus band mix)? Remember to keep in mind the 'budget'!
Thanks for any advice.

Yep, you should be good to go depending on if your iPad is up to it.
I did this just the other night at rehearsal with an additional midi keyboard and drum pads daisy-chained into the EIE's MIDI din plug. Although I have no need currently to send an additional out.

Any mic for audience will do.

@Fitz - I've used it in a similar manner. There is a channel output for each of the four input combi jacks. They are on the rear of the EIE. The USB host does allow for discrete channel outputs, so you can dedicate an Auria track for each input.

I can't offer much on the mic selection though. Good luck with that!

Thanks guys. So if I want to record the live sound of the band plus audience is it not best to use a condenser mic? I only have an SM57 at the moment.

SM57 will work just fine. Condensers are fine as well.

I have the red EIE and have used it to record with Auria while sending
live sound at performance and it works great- For a room mic I use
a Studio Projects B3 ($160USD) the sound is great to my ear it
holds its own with some much more expensive mics which I might be
disinclined to be dangling from the rafters or too close to a drummer.
It's a large diaphragm multi-pattern design you can run it omni
cardioid or something else I never used has a high pass(very handy)
10 Db pad- check it out.
The sm57 is a great mic and might pick up more than you think
if placed in the magic spot. I'd give that a try to start. A little compression
on a nice room sound can really punch things up sometimes. Also
one can pick up the most interesting conversational buzzes from
the crowd and then of course there is the applause.
Best wishes for quality acquisitions jp

Thanks pizipado, the B3 looks interesting. So this would also be good to record a classical guitar? There is a MK2 on Amazon that looks to be a good price, is there any difference between MK’s?
