Mic'ing Drums /w 2 mics

Post by superhunter2 » Sun Sep 06, 2015 8:37 am

I'm going to be recording some drums for upcoming ep. I know it's not ideal but all I have is an sm57 and a nt1-a. Any suggestions/experience in placement for either mic? I want to emphasize kick and snare but which would be better for either? Thanks

extreme situation....
my suggestion:

NT1a less than meter from and above the cymbal. Sound Axled to the hihat's right edge.
SM57 in height of the top of bass dr. , axled up to center, betveen the toms...
You can isolate bass dr., sub with low pass eq, create - virtual 3. channel. and so on..
The solution is big compromisse.
Play with gate, compr, eq. Try to create filtered stereo track to isolate single instruments.
Make isolated instument tracks to trig, than use Drumagog :)

You're definitely going to have to experiment. It's a bugger. Been a few decades since I did this, but one on the snare, one on the kick, and two overhead would be a minimum. With just two, I'd be almost tempted to pull back and do a wide stereo from about 10 feet out. That way you're not going to get anything overpowering anything else.

My absolute minimum is a stereo pair of 2 condenser, as overhead.
+1 more NT1a make stereo ortf (17cm distance and110') or XY-coincident 120'.
The sm57 usable to for bass drum with double foam, towels, sponge... some low pass in channel...
Simple overhead may enough for acoustic jazz os similar music style. For harder music needs more mic.
