p.74 of the online manual is about automation. searched for the word 'ripple' nothing comes up.

Am I missing something?

I guess to put it simply it cuts holes in the timeline and closes the gap allowing you to shorten arrangements easily.

At least that how I'm understanding it. I'm sure it can do more than that though.

Definitely - ripple mode is OFF by default. If you need to enable or disable it, just go to the Edit menu. The option to enable/disable it is on the bottom on the menu.
