Synth/Keyboard app

Post by firehosed » Thu Apr 03, 2014 4:33 am

Does anyone know of a good keyboard/synth app I could use for traditional keyboard sounds (horns, strings, wood winds, etc?) I have several, but they all seem to be "odd synth" sounds.

You need a sample based app. soundfont players are popular on iOS, a couple of good ones I can recommend are BS16i and Music Studio.

BS16i supports free soundfonts which can be found on the internet, there is a pretty good one called Sonatina which has some excellent orchestral samples. Music Studio comes bundled with a full set of orchestral samples.

Another option is Sampletank, which has orchestral packs you can buy.

Here is a sample of the Sonatina soundfont in BS16i:

and this is the Miroslav add on pack in SampleTank:

I was already leaning towards Music Studio, that video pretty much sold it. Thank you.

The orchestra in music studio aren't the worst as far as IOS apps in that price range but the rest of the sounds are kinda general midi ish sounding to me, especially the piano. I use Sampletank for iOS and the miroslav Philharmonic expansion pack. IMO the best strings for iOS. Sampletank has a nice piano also but I use IGrand for most of my piano work on iOS. It's definitely more expensive though. $20 each but I think it's worth it.
I don't have the bizmark but I'm considering It, seems like a nice app.

I think it's subjective, the orchestral sounds in Music Studio are from the Sonatina soundfont, which to my ears sounds better than Sampletank's Miroslav pack - you can hear the difference for yourself in my first post above, which compares BS16i (using the same Sonatina soundfonts as Music Studio) against Sampletank.

But I like Sampletank for plenty of other things, as well as BS16i and iGrand - they're all great apps.

+1 for Sampletank here but I have to say after that Musicstudio demo clip above I just bought it as well.

Yea I'm not mad at the strings in music studio and some of the other sounds aren't bad, music studio was one of the first Daws I owned but after a side by side on my ipad Sampletank was the winner for me and as for the 2 demos you posted they both sound great.
