The issue is actually not related to AU plugins not working, the issue is related specifically to AU effects loaded on the Master AUX FX insert slots. @Rim you should take a look at this, when I load an AU effect (not internal effects, AU only) ...

I just checked this again and it works fine for me in 2.23. The input port on MIDI tracks is set to “All” by default, but in case you don’t want to trigger a MIDI track with your MIDI controller you need to select “Off” as Input Port on that specific track, or any other Port but the controller port.
