You've seen a lag in automation when not using looping? I haven't seen this. Was it happening when using standard controls (fader, pan, etc), or using plug-in parameters, or channelstrip controls? The lag that i've tried to describe occurs especially when, for example, i've set the volume automation control points to fade out a sample. A drum sequencer or sampler in general would be great, and seems even without midi support kinda possible.

Looked it up on Youtube and DrumJam seems really nice. Not a drum machine as such, but a nice different tool nonetheless. You just can't really create your own beats in there, seemingly. You have to stick with the loops, although there are many of it.

But for Garageband, couldn't you just create whatever string piece you want there, export the mixdown to dropbox (or iTunes, or whatever works best) and import it from here to Auria? It's not optimal but it should work.

ThumbJam comes with a good string section, including Cello, Viola, Violin and String Ensemble. It works on a pianoroll basis, supports audiocopy and is overall really nice

I think, for the most part, i don't even need this kind of high resolution of the waveforms. Arrangements, FXs and basic editing including automation could be done with a simplified display quality as well. And for the more subtle editing you could then maybe change either to another resolution or, ...
