No, I'm sure, this won't work.
Connecting the 18i20 with IPad directly without an USB hub Works flawlessly. But I don't know a stabile and working scenario, where you can power your IPad and have the 18i20 working at the same time.

I didn't know that first Gen ipads are able to handle multitrack with more than 2 Tracks....at least you would Need iOS 6 or up for this?

If you have the One knob compressors activated on the Yamaha Mixer, the comparison is a Little unfair, you may experience more Loudness this way.
The Focusrite Preamps can easily take it up with the Yamaha-Preamps, but the dsp Mixer has no Fx like the Yamaha to shape the Sound...

In Theory it should be no Problem to get the spdif Input working. But practically you will get crackles and Noise by using them, because the sync Settings from Scarlett Mix seem to " forget" or ignore the Settings, you made in Scarlett Mix before using them with the IPad. this is a Problem...

I have experienced the same problem 10 minutes ago with my Focusrite Scarlett 18i20. And it really seems to affect only the spdif connection. When I first plugged in my AxeFx via spif, I had the same noise on my laptop, but later I found out, that the Scarlett has to get the sync from spdif (AxeFx) ...
